A WHITE sheet was draped over Shakespeare in Stratford this week as part of a campaign against the forthcoming Hollywood film Anonymous which portrays Shakespeare as a fraud and drunken fool and claims that most of his works were penned by Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford.
The famous Gower Memorial statue in Bancroft Gardens was covered by a large white sheet in a day-long protest which was supported by fellow advocates of Shakespeare‘s authenticity across Britain. The unified actions were designed to demonstrate how different the world would be without its greatest playwright.
Prof Stanley Wells, chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (SBT)—who attended Tuesday‘s day of action in Stratford and who has seen a preview of the film—described the production as “silly and absurd.“
